SD MISSOURI RIVER FISHING/HUNTING REPORT – August 27, 2010
Provided by: Great Lakes of SD Tourism Association
Lake Sharpe has seen good walleye fishing in the Pierre area from the Oahe Dam down past Antelope Creek. Anglers are using spinners and crawlers or crankbaits. Fishing should be good into the fall. At West Bend the fishing is steady for smaller fish with a lot of good rod-bending going on! Best fishing on Lake Sharpe north of Chamberlain is from Iron Nation to the Big Bend Dam in 15-20 feet of water.
Around Chamberlain on Francis Case the fishing is fair to good from Chamberlain to the Big Bend Dam in about the 15-20 foot depths. Anglers are using crankbaits and crawlers and there are limits coming in but you have to look for the fish with a different bite each day. Smallmouth are also biting in this area.
In the Plattearea fishing is picking up! Anglers are having good luck south of the bridge around Platte Creek, pulling plugs over submerged trees. Best depth is 35-45 feet. Ramps are open and camping has been very busy.
At the Pickstown and Wagnerareas walleye fishing on the lake from South Shore north to Wheeler has been fair. Anglers have seen a crawler bite in 15-22 feet of water. Fishing below the dam has been slow.
On the Missouri River they are catching bluegill and crappie on minnows and worms. The catfish bit seems to be the best on stink bait. Drum can be caught on crawdads. Down along the Nebraska Handicapped section, anglers are catching bluegill, channel catfish, flatheads and small mouth bass.

Stabiliation Work Complete on St. Joseph's Indian School Campus Landmark
Stabiliation Work Complete on St. Joseph's Indian School Campus Landmark
Jessica Giard/Sun A historic Chamberlain landmark underwent work this summer to keep it from, more or less, falling into the ground.
Not uncommon for the Chamberlain area, weak soil has allowed for gradual settling of the chapel on the St. Joseph’s Indian School campus. Stabilization work on the 54-year old building is complete, and contractors are now finishing roofing work on the entire chapel.
The chapel’s foundation has settled by nine inches at the northeast corner of the building, due to a deep vein of weak soil. From inside, the drop is apparent by a sloping floor and some separation between the walls at the inside northeast corner. Surveyors also noted that the chapel’s steeple leans to the north.
Tom Thomas, safety supervisor at St. Joseph’s, said the settling was documented over the past 10 years, but it was time to fix it before the chapel was damaged any further.
To stop the settling and prevent further damage, engineers devised a plan that involved stainless steel pipes to be pushed into the ground and then attached to the chapel’s foundation.
Work to install the pipes began June 9 and finished July 6. Fifty-five pipes – called push piers – were hydraulically pushed into the ground until they met underlying shale bedrock.
