Cubs Advance to First Round Playoffs 20-6 over Todd Co. for Lone Regular Season Win JANICE MOSEL/SUN
CHAMBERLAIN – With a berth in the playoffs at stake, the Cubs put it together on both sides of the ball to knock off the 6-1 Todd County Falcons, 20-6, Thursday night. The two teams will match up again on Tuesday, Oct. 27 in Mission.
Prior to kick-off, the parents were honored by their student athletes.
Temperatures at Don Giese field hovered near freezing, but did not dampen the spirits of the fans as they cheered the Cubs on to their first win of the season.
A defensive battle in the first half saw the score tied at 0 – 0. After halftime adjustments, the Cubs took the first possession of the third quarter and marched 42 yards for a touchdown, sparked by a fourth and ten pass completion from Michael Langdeau to Michael Schwartz to keep the drive alive. On third and 10 from the 11, Langdeau found Peter Delgado for a 10 yard completion to the end zone for the score. The PAT failed.
The defense held the Falcons to three and out and the Cubs returned the punt to the Todd County 47. On a first and ten from the 33, Schwartz caught a 31 yard pass to set up first and goal at the two. Two plays later, Tiel Glaus punched it in for the touchdown with 3:31 remaining in the quarter. The PAT pass to Gunner Hickey was good and the Cubs led 14-0.
Todd County answered with a 57 yard drive for a touchdown, scoring with only a few seconds left in the third quarter. The PAT failed.
The Falcons held the Cubs forcing a punt on fourth and twelve. Schwartz intercepted a Falcon pass to regain possession.
Starting at their own 41 the Cubs, aided by two costly Todd County penalties, moved the ball to the Falcon five yard line. On 2nd a goal, Tyson Langdeau ran the ball in from the three for the Cubs third touchdown of the evening with 5:45 remaining in the game. The PAT failed. The Todd County drive was ended by a Benji Hammell interception. Starting at their own 20, the Cubs were held and punted with 3:01 on the clock.
A final Todd County drive was halted by a Tyson Langdeau interception to secure the Chamberlain win.
The Langdeau duo led the Cub offense. Michael passed for 109 years while Tyson ran for another 147. Michael Schwartz had 79 yards on four pass completions.
The defense held the Falcons to 102 yards on the ground and forced four turnovers. Jade Basting and Teil Glaus led the defense with 12 and 10 tackles respectively.
Chamberlain (1-7), no. 4 seed, and Todd County (6-2), no. 1 seed, will advance to playoffs in Region 3 Tuesday night, Oct. 27 at 7 pm in Mission.
