Two-Year Bridge Rehab Work Underway Jessica Giard/Sun
When the prime contractor for the old Highway 16 bridge project moves in, that’s when the community will really see work being done.
Tammy Williams, Mitchell region DOT engineer, said Heavy Constructors, Inc. will start on removing the roadway deck once they move in the week of July 27.
On Friday, July 17, Williams hosted a public information meeting at the Oacoma Community Center to give updates on the project. The painting contractor began moving in equipment on Wednesday, July 8. Since then, crews have been installing a cable system underneath the bridge to support a work platform and system to contain debris.
She said the roadway – the bridge deck – will be completely removed and replaced. “It’s in pretty bad shape,” said Williams.
Contractors will also be removing paint from the bridge, which will be contained by a canvas enclosure. “It will totally contain the lead-based paint removed from the enclosure,” she said. The truss spans will be repainted with an aluminum-colored paint, similar to the current color.
