In the aftermath
As nearly the entire Chamberlain/Oacaoma Fire Department fought to control and contain the fire at the Silver Dollar Bar in downtown Chamberlain last Monday, October 21, community members were offering support to the bar’s owner, Angela Zeman and family. Concern and appreciation to the firemen was expressed through social media. Many people posted comments in support of the firemen ranging from “Thank you for serving our community” to “God Bless all of you.”
According to Fire Chief Kurt Kelsey 25 of the 33 firemen on the current roster answered the fire call with four trucks, two pumpers, the ladder truck and the rescue truck. “It was a difficult fire to fight... with multi-layers of roofs, an attic space we couldn’t access... it was hard to get ahead of it,” said Kelsey. “We have an excellent group of guys in the department and our training paid off. They just did a great job!” The fire was contained to the bar building and the brick building next door to the south that was also part of the Silver Dollar and the former location of the old Derby Cafe.
