County Commission denies CAFO permit in Brule County

Proponents and opponents of a proposed CAFO (Concentrated animal feeding operation) hog facility, along with their respective legal counsels, gathered in the Brule county courthouse courtroom for a conditional use permit hearing during the Brule county commission meeting held Thursday, November 8. With less than the required 66 2/3 percent majority vote needed to approve the application, commissioners, convened as the Board of Adjustment, denied the request by Foundation Farms RE LLC of Pipestone, Minnesota, and Greg Kroupa of Kimball, to construct the 8062 head, sow farm facility in Plummer Township in northeast Brule county.

The Brule county Planning and Zoning board had previously recommended denying the permit application at their Oct. 9 meeting by a vote of 5-1, because the odor effects and general compatibility on adjoining properties is not acceptable.
