Heavy rains add to flooding along Missouri River

Lake Francis Case is on the rise again for the second time this spring. Last month, following late season snowstorms and heavy rains, the Missouri River at Chamberlain crested at 67.67 feet on April 3. The high water delayed the opening of boat ramps and the campground at American Creek in Chamberlain, and sent water over the causeways at the Cedar Shore Marina. Within a few weeks the water started to recede, and locals were hopeful that was the end of flooding for 2019. Monday morning campers at American Creek Campground were greeted by Missouri River water as it rapidly encroached into the day use area and threatened the campground. City crews and volunteers worked to plug leaks in the concrete barrier wall erected on the road to keep the water out of the campground, while people packed up camp and evacuated the area
