Howe leaves career, tradition behind with retirement
When Dale Howe retired from South Dakota Wheat Growers last week, most of his coworkers from the past 13 years had no idea just how much knowledge and experience was leaving the company.
Howe’s great-grandfather, Emmett Howe, was a pioneer in the fertilizer industry in Brooklyn Center, Minn., north of Minneapolis. That area of the country had been thick with potato farmers until the late 1800s, when the soil was depleted of its natural mineral base.
