River City Friday Nights committee named HomeTown Heroes

Recognized for their community service, members of the River City Friday Nights committee were named Hometown Heroes during the program hosted by Modern Woodmen of America representatives Julie Soulek and Marcella Strand August 17 at American Island Days in Chamberlain. Soulek and Strand each have four Modern Woodmen Camps and were able to present eight Hometown Hero awards.

Each group named as Hometown Heros received $100 to be given to their favorite charity or non-profit organization.

The nomination as submitted for the River City Friday Nights committee read as follows: Four years ago, three downtown business owners began discussing opportunities to increase Main street traffic. These
ladies began talking with the Chamber- Oacoma Chamber of Commerce who shared the same goal of increasing traffic to local businesses. Together, they networked and scheduled a meeting with an Event Consultant, which unfortunately came with a $15,000 price tag. Due to lack of funding and some very creative minds, a small group decided to independently forge their own downtown event.
