Sandra Nies

Funeral services for Sandra Nies, 72, of Chamberlain will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Presho, SD. Sandy was born Sept. 12, 1946 in Presho to Roy and Frances (Jensen) Bingen. She attended country school near the family farm south of Kennebec, graduated from Reliance High School and attended Augustana College. After her children graduated from high school, she continued her education at Presentation College, receiving a bachelor's degree at the age of 55. While riding the bus home from Augustana, she met a "shy" young soldier, David William Nies, returning from his initial military in-processing in Sioux Falls. After many subsequent sisterchaperoned dates, Sandy and David were united in marriage on June 15, 1966. Throughout her life, Sandy dealt with many adversities, starting with the discovery of hip problems when she was learning to walk. At the beginning of her marriage, her new husband was deployed to Vietnam, while she was pregnant with their first child. At the age of 25, she lost both of her parents and a brother-in-law in a car accident. Having four small children at the time, she still took on the task of finishing raising her 12-year-old sister. As a result of this tragedy, she and her siblings placed great emphasis on family. She also became especially close to David's parents, Ted and Esther Nies. Her medical challenges continued throughout her life, but she dealt with all of them with courage, perseverance, dignity and grace. As many can attest, she was unfailingly kind (unless she was playing against you in a board game -- she showed no mercy and almost always won). Sandy worked as a homemaker and parttime librarian in Presho. After receiving her degree, she worked as a medical records technician at Avera St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre for 23 years. But the favorite job of her life was being "Grandmother Extraordinaire". She enjoyed reading, gardening, puzzle books and sewing. She was an exceptional cook and baker and loved doing both for and with her family. She also liked keeping up with friends and family on Facebook. Sandra "Sandy" Kay Nies, 72, of Chamberlain died suddenly at home Feb. 6, 2019. Sandy is survived by her husband of 52 years; four children, Jeanne (Damian) Nies-Donahoe of West Des Moines, IA, Barbara Gakin of Kimball, Brian Nies of Sioux Falls and Debra Nies of Chamberlain; ten grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; and three siblings, Gary (Sharon) Bingen of Lower Brule, Roger (Judi) Bingen of Columbus, NE and Linda Bingen of Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Frances Bingen; two sisters, Karen Opbroek Meeker and Susan Vander Woude; twin brothers at birth, Keith and Kenneth; three brothers-in-law, Steven Opbroek, Richard Meeker and Paul Vander Woude; and her father- and mother-in-law, Ted and Esther Nies.
