Substitute pay will go on next School Board agenda
Chamberlain School District Board of Education Vice-President Annette Priebe opened the Monday board meeting by extending condolences on behalf of the district to the family of Cole Hickey. The Board extended their thanks and appreciation to the Ministerial Assoc. Sanford, and Dakota Counseling Institute for their support over the past few weeks. The Hickey family would like to donate a bench to the district in Cole’s memory.
Paraprofessional Sara Hopkins reported to the board on substitute teacher pay, showing graphs of comparative rates neighboring schools pay for both licensed and unlicensed teachers. There is generally a shortage of substitute teachers for the district, with 10 substitutes available to share between two buildings. Hopkins suggested to raise substitute pay for licensed subs who sub for paras/librarians to licensed sub pay, instead of unlicensed pay, and to raise sub pay for subs who do not have a license to $90/day. In July, the district raised the licensed substitute pay to $100/day. The board will schedule this item on the August 22 meeting agenda to put the matter to a vote.
