Bernice Helen Altman, 90, of Kimball, SD passed away November 19, 2016 at the Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake, SD. Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Kimball. Mount Funeral Home of Kimball is assisting with arrangements. Bernice Helen (Powers) Altman was born on April 27, 1926 to David and Mary (Berkemeir) Powers on the family farm near Kimball, SD. She attended country grade school, graduated from Kimball High School in 1944 and received her Teaching Certificate from Southern State Normal School in Springfield, SD. For the next five years she taught in rural schools in Aurora and Brule Counties. On August 4, 1947 Bernice was united in marriage to Eugene Altman at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Kimball. To this union five children were born: Dwayne, John Anthony, Diane, Dennis and Doug. They made their home in Plankinton, SD where Bernice continued to teach in rural schools. In 1949 they moved to a farm southeast of town until relocating to their farm northwest of Kimball in 1953. There they farmed and operated a gravel and water hauling business. Then in 1977, they moved from the farm into Kimball. Bernice was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, the Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Grateful for having shared in Bernice’s life: her husband of over 69 years, Gene Altman of Kimball, SD; their two sons: Dwayne (Bonnie) Altman of Kimball, SD and Doug Altman of Mitchell, SD; 14 grandchildren; many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Bernice was preceded in death by a son, Dennis; an infant son, John Anthony; a daughter, Diane Bussey and husband, Danny; an infant granddaughter; an infant great granddaughter; her parents, David and Mary Powers; two sisters: Gertrude Powers and Darline Gerdes; five brothers: Lenard, Martin, John, Donald and Billy Powers; two infant brothers; and several in-laws.
