Funeral services for Donald E. McGhee, 79, of Crow Creek, SD were held on November 15, 2016 at the Crow Creek Community Building with burial in the St. John’s Episcopal Cemetery at Crow Creek. Donald Edward McGhee was born February 9, 1937 at Crow Creek, SD to Ernest and Lacey (Ashley) McGhee. He attended a Crow Creek Elementary Country School and also at Fort Thompson. He attended high school at Fort Thompson, St. Elizabeth’s, Wakpala, SD and his senior year at Flandreau Indian School in Flandreau, SD where he graduated in 1955. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp serving from 1955 through 1958 with an Honorable Discharge. During his time with the Marine’s, Donald also served as a Drill Instructor. After his discharge from the Marines he began working at the Oahe Dame at Pierre, SD as an iron worker until its completion. He then went to Sacramento, CA to work construction before returning to Fort Thompson in 1961 where he went to work for Big Bend Dam until 1964. At that time he moved to Crow Creek and began ranching cattle and horses. In 1969 he was elected to the Tribal Council for the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe. He represented his people for over 30 years from 1969 until 2012 and two of the terms during 1986 -1990 as the Tribal Chairman. He kept up his Iron Workers Membership with the Local 184 out of Sioux City, IA and went back to work at different times going to work on Missile sites at Kearney, NE, Larimore, ND, and Shelby, MT. In 1959, he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Barse and to this union four children were born Dawn, Rhea, Dean, and Winona. Later, Donald was united in marriage to Lynn Felicia and to this union a son Darren was born. Donald passed away on November 9, 2016 at Firesteel Nursing Home in Mitchell, SD at the age of 79 years. Gratefully sharing his life are his wife Lynn McGhee of Crow Creek; his children, Dawn McGhee of Crow Creek, SD, Rhea (Bill) Canku of Flandreau, SD, Dean (Amy) McGhee of Lower Brule, SD and Noni (Josh) McGhee, of Flandreau, SD; six grandchildren, Hannah McGhee, Jake Wells, Payton Canku, Lilliana, Hazen & Dexter (Darren’s children); and many other relatives. Preceding him in death were his parents Ernest and Lacey (Ashley) McGhee; son Darren McGhee; two sisters Elizabeth Isburg and Roberta Big Eagle; and a brother Richard Swan.
