Memorial services for Dorothy M. Surat, 76, of Platte, SD were held Monday, November 19, 2018 at the First Reformed Church in Platte, SD with burial of the ashes in the Union Cemetery at Bijou Hills, SD. Dorothy Mae Havlik was born August 14, 1942 at Mitchell, SD to James J. and Leona (Urban) Havlik. She attended elementary school and high school in Kimball, SD. On October 17, 1959, Dorothy was united in marriage to Robert F. Surat in St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Kimball. They moved to Lead, SD in 1964 relocating to several different towns before returning to the Bijou Hills area in 1975 to the Surat homestead where Bob and Dorothy built and ran a dairy. It later evolved into farming and ranching. Dorothy enjoyed bowling and playing card games with all the family. She was very loving and caring. She especially loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed cooking and baking, always making sure that there was a meal to be had by anyone who stopped and that no one left hungry. Dorothy passed away on November 11, 2018 at home at Bijou Hills at the age of 76 years. Gratefully sharing her life are her husband of 59 years Bob Surat of Platte, SD; children Brett (Patty) Surat of Kimball, SD, Jacqueline (Marty) Young of Peshastin, WA, Curtis Surat of Kimball, SD, Robert W Surat of New Richland, MN, Lisa (Lynn) Murtha of Emery, SD, and Vicky (Steve) Olsen of Platte, SD; 26 grandchildren Rachel (Ryan) Warnholtz, Kristen (Nick) Page, Daniel (Carisa) Young, Rebeccah (Lucas) McComas, Grace (Micah) Hartmann, Angela, James, Benjamin, and Jonathan Young, Corbin (Kasy) Surat, Holden, Ashley, and Hannah Surat, Kirk (Desirae) Surat, Lydia (Rudy) Niewenhuis, Justina Pierce, Jessica Nova, Maci, Jadyn and Jaren Surat, Brylee Sommer, Kaitlyn (Spencer) James, Colton Sommer, Samantha (Aaron) Booth, Emily (fiance’ Dalton) Olsen, Karley Olsen, and Gary and Patrick Steffen; and 23 great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters and brothers-in-law Floyd Lomica, Mary (Kenny) Stanek, Carol Clark, Clara (Roger) Stevens, Jim (Joyce) Havlik, and Connie (Jay) Fatland. Preceding her in death were her parents James and Leona Havlik and sister Betty Lomica.
