Elizabeth “Liz” Zeman
Funeral services for Elizabeth J. “Liz” Zeman, 83, of Oacoma were held on November 5, 2016 at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain. Elizabeth Jean Martin was born March 19, 1933 at Chamberlain to Ed and Elsie (Craft) Martin. She was raised in Pukwana and later the family moved to the family ranch north of Fort Thompson. She attended high school in Chamberlain and graduated in 1951. She received a music scholarship to the University of South Dakota and attended there for one year before returning to Chamberlain. On August 21, 1952 Liz was united in marriage to Henry C. “Hank” Zeman at Worthington, MN. Liz had a beautiful voice and for many years she sang at area weddings and funerals. She loved playing the piano which she did until her arthritis made it too difficult to do so. Some of her fondest memories were of her singing at rallies when her father ran for governor. For many years, she worked for Lee Schoenhard and Kaltsulas Ford. In 1968, they moved to the family farm which she inherited from her father and where they built their home in the early 1970’s. The family put irrigation on the land and built it into a successful family farm. Liz did all the bookwork and would drive truck as an extra hand during harvest season. They remained on the farm until 1994 when they retired and moved to Chamberlain/Oacoma where they built a home and developed the Country Homes Addition near Cedar Shore Resort in Oacoma. Liz enjoyed playing bridge, and many other card games with family and friends. She had a lifelong passion for animals especially horses and dogs and an extra special fondness for paints and poodles. She and Hank lived in their beautiful home overlooking the Missouri until Hank passed away in 2007. She continued to live there until moving to Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain due to her failing health. Liz will always be remembered for when you asked her how she was doing she would reply with a smile “About half”. Liz was a member of the United Church of Christ, The Order of The Eastern Star, and of the Traveler’s Club. Liz passed away on October 30, 2016 at Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain at the age of 83 years. Gratefully sharing her life are her daughter Marguerite Zeman of Sioux Falls, SD; two sons, Thomas D. and wife Mary J. of Omaha, NE and Mick and wife Cathy of Vermillion, SD; six grandchildren: Jason Wicks, Arin and husband Jonathan Hornsby, Jessica L.
