Francis “Nick” Martin Emerson, 95, of Jackson, MN, formerly of Kimball, SD passed away Saturday, November 10, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society – The Pines in Jackson. Funeral Mass is 10:30 A.M. Saturday, November 17, 2018 at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Kimball. A Committal Service with Military Honors will take place at St. Margaret’s Catholic Cemetery, a reception will follow at the church. Visitation will be held at the church from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Friday, November 16, 2018 with a 7:00 P.M. Wake Service and Rosary. Mount Funeral Home of Kimball is assisting with arrangements. Francis “Nick” Martin Emerson was born in LaMoure, North Dakota on September 15, 1923. His parents were Frank and Laura (Hesse) Emerson. The family moved to Woonsocket, South Dakota. Nick attended grade school and high school in Woonsocket and graduated in May of 1942. Nick enlisted in the U.S. Army in the fall of 1942. He took basic training at Camp Callan in California. His final combat training was completed at Camp Erwin in California. His unit was engaged in major World War II battles across Europe, including the amphibious landing at Normandy Beach, France and the Battle of the Bulge. Their unit met up with the Russian Army in Germany, and the war ended shortly thereafter. He was honorably discharged in the fall of 1945. Nick received many medals, ribbons and citations for his military service. Nick was married to the love of his life, Evelyn Janzing, at St. Wilfred’s Catholic Church on November 3, 1948 in Woonsocket. To this union four children were born – Bonnie, Jerry, Kathy and Julie. The family moved to Kimball, South Dakota in 1955. Nick was employed by Central Electric & Telephone Co. which was purchased by Northwestern Public Service. He was a warehouse man and advanced to lineman, service man and District Superintendent. He retired from Northwestern Public Service after 40 years on September 30, 1988. He was a member of the Kimball Fire Dept., Drips American Legion Post #130, St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and served for a time on the local school board. He coached many youth baseball teams throughout the years. He was frequently seen at various high school sporting events in his hometown. He was a diehard Boston Red Sox and Green Bay Packers fan. However, his love of golf remained his favorite sport and past-time. Nick and Evelyn moved to Jackson, Minnesota in 2017 and resided at The Pines assisted living. He passed away on November 10, 2018 in Jackson. Grateful for having shared in Nick’s life: his wife, Evelyn Emerson; three daughters: Bonnie (Stan) Shearer, Kathy (Randy) Massaro and Julie Blankartz; a daughter-inlaw, Patti Emerson; eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Nick was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Emerson (1994); his parents, Frank and Laura Emerson; two sisters: Marjorie Pittman and Lorraine (Lyle) Rawlings; as well as many other relatives.
