Gwendolyn Hoffer

Funeral services for Gwendolyn J. Hoffer, 76, of Reliance, SD were held on November 23, 2016 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain with burial in the Reliance Cemetery at Reliance. Gwendolyn Jean Williams was born January 20, 1940 to James and Elaine (Neuman) Williams. She attended school in Canning through the sixth grade and then in Pierre where she graduated from high school in 1958. After high school, she attended Dakota Wesleyan University and received a teaching certificate. She taught in the Reliance-Chamberlain area for several years. On November 21, 1961, Gwen was united in marriage to Daniel F. Hoffer at Pierre, SD. To this union three sons were born Mike, Bryan, and Collin. They made their home on the farm where she raised their children. Around 1976, Gwen began her career for Northwestern Bank serving in various positions throughout the years and retiring after 30 years from the Insurance Division. After her retirement, she started working at St. Joseph’s Indian School at the daycare facility and finally in Akta Lakota Museum. She retired from St. Joseph’s due to her battle with cancer which she fought courageously off and on for 31 years. She loved to travel to visit family and was always on the go. She enjoyed playing cards and dominoes. Gwen enjoyed baking, cooking, and spending time with family and at church activities. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Reliance. Gwen passed away on November 18, 2016 at her home at Reliance at the age of 76 years. Gratefully sharing her life are her husband Daniel of Reliance; three sons Mike (Tawna) Hoffer of Reliance, Bryan (Lisa) Hoffer of Jamestown, ND, and Collin Hoffer; nine grandchildren Tyler, Michael, Christena, Brent, BryAnna, Baxter, LiAnna, Angelique, Wyatt, Austin, and Megan; five great grandchildren Christian, Nevaeh, Brody, Caden, Gavin; a sister Joan Sterling of Pierre; a brother-in-law Charles Sterling in Fort Pierre, SD; three sisters-in-law Dorothy Stewart of Reliance, Betty Grass of Rapid City, and Sharon Williams of Pierre; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents James and Elaine Williams, mother and father-in-law Fred and Christena Hoffer; two brothers James and Robert Williams; a sister Carol Sterling; two sisters-in-law Bertha Byer and Marion Lynde; four brothers-in-law Stan Sterling, Joe Lynde, Carroll Stewart, and Clinton Grass, and several other relatives.
