Irene Marie Ryan

Irene Marie Ryan, 94, of Kimball, SD passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at the Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake, SD. Funeral Mass was held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, October 24, 2016 at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Kimball. A Committal Service followed at St. Margaret’s Catholic Cemetery. Irene Marie (Hanten) Ryan was born on May 13, 1922 to Nicholas and Susan (Leibrich) Hanten in Platte, SD. The family moved to White Lake, SD when she was five years old. Irene graduated from White Lake High School and began to pursue a career in education while attending Notre Dame Junior College in Mitchell, SD for two years. She continued her schooling for the next two years at Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish, SD where she earned her BS degree in Education. Irene went on to teach middle school in Delmont, Kimball, Pierre and Aberdeen, SD and then in Washington state. On October 5, 1958 Irene was united in marriage to John Ryan in White Lake. Together they published The Brule County News until Jack passed away in 1980 and the paper was sold. In addition, she worked as Bookkeeper for Aurora-Brule Rural Water System, Inc. From 1979 until retiring on November 1, 1998. Irene was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Kimball, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Altar Society. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and participated in bowling – taking part in 25 National Bowling Tournaments across the United States. She also enjoyed playing card games of all kinds, especially Bridge. Grateful for having shared in Irene’s life: a brother, Oliver (Lorraine) Hanten of Platte, SD; two sisters: Lyola Meyers of Avon, SD and Susan (Mike) Kerrick of Oregon; along with many nieces and nephews. Irene was preceded in death by her husband, John Ryan; her parents, Nicholas and Susan Hanten; three sisters: Katherine Flanagan, Theresa Frandsen and Anastasia Hanten; five brothers: Leonard, Ed, Anthony, Nick, Jr. and Richard Hanten; and several in-laws.
