Leon Kirkie, IV was born Dec. 4, 1977 to Leon and Judy (Grey Cloud) Kirkie at Jerauld County Memorial Hospital in Wessington Springs, SD. He was the youngest of eight children: six boys and two girls.

Leon attended Head Start school in Big Bend, SD. He then went to school at Fort Thompson Elementary, and went to middle school and high school at Crow Creek Tribal School, where he graduated in 1996.

In high school, Leon played softball with a team known as the "Young Guns". They traveled all over and won the State "A" Tournament first in Mitchell and Huron, SD. They went to Tuscaloosa, AL in 1994 and also Tifton, GA in 1995.

He then attended school at Vo-Tech in Rapid City. When he left Rapid City he went on to school at United Tribes in Bismarck, ND.

Leon worked at various jobs when he returned home. He worked as a security guard at the high school. He worked at Crow Creek Housing, and worked as a security guard at the Tribal Hall. At the time of his death, he was employed at the Lode Star Casino as a cook.

Leon was well known by a lot people. He was known as a quiet guy and liked to joke a lot. All his friends who know him can tell some crazy stories about him. He was a big Nebraska Cornhusker Fan. He will be missed by the children who called him "papa", he was always teasing them.

There are two young girls who he helped raise, Evelyn and Ora. They will miss him dearly, they were his pride and joy.

Leon left us so suddenly we never got to say goodbye, but his memories will be with us forever. Our hearts are broken because he was so young, he had a whole lifetime ahead of him.

Leon leaves behind his mother Judy Kirkie, six brothers: Craig Kirkie of Libson, OH, Willard Kirkie of Sandstone, MN, Monte, Myron, Russell, and Ryan Kirkie all of Fort Thompson, three sisters: Jody and Ronna Kirkie both of Fort Thompson, SD, January Freemont of Omaha, NE, two very special girls, Evelyn and Ora Charging Whirl Wind, many nieces and nephews, along with many other relatives.
