Leroy E. Speckels

Funeral services for Leroy E. Speckels, 91, of Chamberlain were held Friday, June 21, 2019 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain. Leroy Emil Speckels was born May 6, 1928 to Emil & Ella (Veskerna) Speckels in Chamberlain, SD. He grew up on their family farm. He attended a one room country grade school, graduated from Chamberlain High in 1945 & studied at SD School of Mines in 1945-46. Leroy worked as a farm hand in 1946 for George Otto who had leased their family farm. Leroy married Beth Roush in January, 1947 and took over running the family farm. To this union six beloved children were born: Rhicky, Randy, Becky, Timothy, Jenny, & Kip. In 1948 he bought O.C. Smith’s farm, two miles from his parent’s home place. His love of farming & raising/ feeding cattle was apparent in everything he did from his feedlot to his bountiful fields of wheat, corn, sorghum, & oats. Leroy won the Soil Conservation Award in 1960. Even suffering a terrible accident in 1964 (losing his right arm) didn’t discourage him. His faith in God & determination to care for his children gave him the courage to rise above this horrific incident & continue his joy of farming. Leroy was united in marriage to LaVerle Homan on January 23, 1971. Through this union, he gratefully received 3 more children to cherish: Renee, Cheri, & Don. He & LaVerle worked side by side farming until they retired in 1988. During their marriage, they traveled to England, Spain, Hawaii, several US States visiting family & friends, & cruised the Caribbean. Dad enjoyed playing cards and visiting with family & friends. He dearly loved big game hunting. On one trip to a remote area in Alaska, accessible only by plane, he along with his brother, Milo, and son, Randy, almost didn’t make it home due to a fire, inclement weather, and a sick pilot! He delighted in attending his children’s school events, dancing with his LaVerle, and watching favorite Westerns and Fox News. He was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain for most his life. He served as an elder, as a board member, and as head of the building committee for a church community room addition. He also served on the Pukwana Township School Board and as Clerk of Pukwana Township. Another sad “moment” in Dad’s life was when they sold the farm in 2009; but again, he handled this change with aplomb, moving forward to a different chapter in life. He & mom moved to Oacoma, then Chamberlain, & then to Regency Assisted Living. In 2013, Dad moved to Sanford Care Center. He was crowned Homecoming King by the residents in 2014 and 2018. Leroy passed away on Father's Day, June 16, 2019 at Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain at the age of 91 years. Thankful to have shared in his life are his eight children Randy Speckels of Canada, Kip Speckels of Sioux Falls, SD, Rhicky Speckels and husband Gary Windler of Summerville, SC, Becky Hare of Kansas City, MO, Jenny Speckels of Berkley, CA, Don Homan and wife Suzy of Casper, WY, Cheri Williamson and husband Jeff of Reliance, SD; and Renee Schaub of Chamberlain, SD; sister-in-law Lila Speckels of Chamberlain; 21 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and eight great great grandchildren.
