Memorial services for Lionel Schooler, 76, of Chamberlain, SD will be 11:00 am Thursday, July 11, 2019 at the Reliance Methodist Church in Reliance, SD. Lloyd Lionel Schooler was born August 16, 1942 to Charles Edward and Naomi (Anderson) Schooler on the family farm north of White River in Lyman County. He attended country school in Lyman County and later when the family moved to Artesian, SD he graduated from Artesian High School in 1960. In 1960, Lionel enlisted in the U.S. Marines serving until 1964. After his discharged, he returned to Lyman County where he began working for Hutmacher Drilling in Oacoma, SD. In 1967, Lionel was united in marriage to Paula David in Sioux Falls, SD. They made their home in Sioux Falls until 1969 when they moved to California and Lionel began working in the Oil Fields as a Superintendent. They returned to South Dakota and made their home in Chamberlain in 1993. They purchased the Black Hills Bar operating that until 1998. He worked at Wesley Acres in Mitchell in maintenance for a short time. In 2000, he began working at the Brule County Courthouse until retiring in 2006. To keep from retirement boredom, Lionel decided to fix mantle clocks for everyone and he learned quickly that almost everyone had a mantle clock that did not work. He also enjoyed buying and selling antiques. He was a little league baseball coach and soccer coach during their time in California. His greatest joy was his grandchildren and great grandchildren and hearing their laughter. In his later years, he began golfing and thoroughly enjoyed his time with the "old guys" at the golf course. Anyone who knew him knew that he always made the BEST homemade ice cream which came from the "Signature Schooler Family Recipe" and would always make it for people's birthday. Even the guys at the golf course would skip lunch sometimes just so they could eat his frozen deliciousness. Lionel passed away on July 3, 2019 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 76 years. Gratefully sharing his life are Paula Schooler of Chamberlain; daughter Jill Anthony of Chamberlain; son Kevin (Kristen) Schooler of Washington; eleven grandchildren; four great grandsons; three brothers Larry Schooler of California, Jack (Darla) Schooler of Arizona, Newell Schooler of Oregon; two sisters Sylvia Thorsenton of Sioux Falls and Billy Mae (Roland) Peterson of Reliance; and
