Mary Kostelecky, 94, of Sioux Falls, SD passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at Avera Prince of Peace.
Funeral Mass were held at 10:30 am Wednesday, November 20, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1501 W. 26th Street with burial at 1:00 pm Thursday, November 21 at Riverview Cemetery, Chamberlain, SD.
Visitation was held with the family present to greet friends will be from 5:00 – 7:00 pm Tuesday, November 19 at Miller Funeral Home- Westside Chapel, 6200 W. 41st Street, Sioux Falls, SD.
Mary Billman, daughter of Jacob and Marianna (Bast) Billman, was born July 15, 1925 at the family home in Sheffield, ND. She was educated at St. Pius Catholic School in Sheffield, ND.
She was working in Bismarck, ND hospital when she met Joe Kostelecky. They were united in marriage on March 4, 1946. To this union they were blessed with six children, Joyce, Jim, Elaine, Arlene, Dale “Bart” and Edward. They lived on a farm North of Dickinson, ND. In 1952, the family moved to South Dakota near Kimball, SD. Then in 1956, the family moved into Chamberlain, SD. She was a wonderful homemaker, but she also served as a cook at the Silver Leaf Café, Truck Arena Café, Mr. B’s, and St. Joseph Indian School. She was well known for the home baked pies she baked for people in the area.
In 1996, Joe passed away, and in 1998 Mary moved to Sioux Falls, SD where she could be closer to her children. She really made friends where she lived and at Christ the King Catholic Church where she was an active member for many years. Mary was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Joyce Ahlquist, Sioux Falls, SD, Jim Kostelecky, Centralia, WA, Arlene (John) Thyberg, Sioux Falls, SD, Dale “Bart” (Julie) Kostelecky, Sioux Falls, SD, and daughter-in-law, Jill (Dave) Saathoff, Renner, SD; seven grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband; Joe; a daughter, Elaine Kostelecky; a son, Edward Kostelecky; son-in-law, Roger Ahlquist; her parents, Jacob and Marianna Billman; seven brothers and sisters.
