Phyllis DeJong

Phyllis DeJong 96 of Bonilla and formerly of Gann Valley passed away Thursday morning April 25 at the Sun Quest Health Care Center in Huron. Her funeral service will be held Friday May 3 at 10:30 AM at the Bonilla Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at 3:00 PM Friday at the Spring Hill Cemetery at Gann Valley. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 at the Basham Funeral Home in Wessington Springs with an Eastern Star Service and a time for sharing at 7:0 PM. In lieu of flowers memorials are requested to the Spring Hill Cemetery at Gann Valley.

Phyllis Jean Henrichsen was born November 6, 1923 at home in Buffalo County the daughter of Frank and Mae (Marshall), Henrichsen. Attended grade school at Prairie Belle School and Gann Valley School but, graduated from Pierre Riggs HS. Returned to Gann Valley and worked at the Hotel.

She was baptized February 22, 1977 at the Church of Christ in Mitchell and later became a member of the Congregational Church in Gann Valley. She was a Bible School and Sunday school teacher and was a member of Lady Helpers. The past 25 years she attended church at the Bonilla Presbyterian Church and SQHCC.

Phyllis married Richard DeJong on September 23, 1947. Throughout her married life she helped her husband on the farm. Both Richard and Phyllis extended their home and cared for many family members and friends.

She was business manager for the Gann Valley School District, PTA, Justice of the Peace, secretary for the Daughters of the Colonial Wars, worthy matron of Eastern Star, and secretarytreasurer of the Spring Hill cemetery board for 51 years. She was a member of three extension clubs, member of the BYYS club. She loved to play cards and continued to play bingo until her death. She attended the Bonilla Church and was a special grandmother in FHA at Tulare and at church.

Her hobbies included keeping a diary of yearly events, writing letters and sending cards, writing short stories and was an avid PBR rodeo fan, 4-H leader and on the state extension board. Following her husband’s death in 1993, she moved to Bonilla, SD and lived with her daughter until her stroke and failing health, she moved to Sunquest Health Care Center in Huron.

She is survived by her children, Vivian Rearick and special friend Ivan Teveldal, of Tulare, and Gary (Vivian) DeJong, Webster; grandchildren Pam (Jim) Zubke, Gwendolynn (John) Sauer, Tamey Rearick and Julie Bent, Tanya (Mike) Brennan, Peggy (Tracey) Beals, Jon (Alesha) Rearick, Nathan (Jaymie) DeJong; great grandchildren , Eric Zepp, Tony Zubke, Ben Zubke, Braydn Beals, Sydney Beals, Hannah Zubke, Margaret Rose Sauer, Jayda, Cody, DeJong , Ethan, Camille, and Roman Rearick; great-great grandson, James Zepp.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother, two sisters, two grandsons, Scott Allen DeJong and Jimmy Rearick.
