Robert F. Surat

Memorial services for Robert F. Surat, 79, of Platte, SD will be 10:30 am Friday, March 15, 2019, at the First Reformed Church in Platte, SD with burial of the ashes in the Union Cemetery at Bijou Hills, SD. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Union Cemetery, c/o Pat Surat 26678 352nd Ave, Pukwana SD 57370. Robert Frank "Bob" Surat was born January 29, 1940, to parents Eleanor Alice (Houska) and Joseph Charles Surat Jr. at the hospital in Chamberlain, SD. Robert grew up on a farm near the Bijou Hills, SD. Robert helped on the family farm by milking cows by hand and raising sheep. He attended Novak grade school until the eighth grade then attended and graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1958. He worked at an auto shop in Chamberlain after graduating. On October 17, 1959, Robert was united in marriage to Dorothy Mae Havlik at St. Margaret's Church in Kimball, SD. In 1966, he went to Lead, SD to work in the Homestake Gold Mine. After this they moved to Gillette, WY to work in the oil patch drilling oil. From there they moved to Akron, CO where he worked in the oil patch there and moved oil rigs. In 1972, he moved the family back to the family farm in South Dakota and started milking. He milked until 1990. He continued farming the remainder of his life. Bob passed away on March 7, 2019 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 79 years. Gratefully sharing his life are his children Brett (Patty) Surat of Kimball, SD, Jacqueline (Marty) Young of Peshastin, WA, Curtis Surat of Kimball, SD, Robert W. (Lisa) Surat of New Richland, MN, Lisa (Lynn) Murtha of Emery, SD, and Vicky (Steve) Olsen of Platte, SD; 26 grandchildren Rachel (Ryan) Warnholtz, Kristen (Nick) Page, Daniel (Carisa) Young, Rebeccah (Lucas) McComas, Grace (Micah) Hartmann, Angela, James, Benjamin, and Jonathan Young, Corbin (Kasy) Surat, Holden, Ashley, and Hannah Surat, Kirk (Desirae) Surat, Lydia (Rudy) Niewenhuis, Justina (Justin) Pierce, Jessica Nova, Maci, Jadyn and Jaren Surat, Brylee Sommer, Kaitlyn (Spencer) James, Colton Sommer, Samantha (Aaron) Booth, Emily (Dalton) Ringling, Karley Olsen, and Gary and Patrick Steffen; and 24 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister Donna (Jim) Olson of Montana. Preceding him in death were his wife of 59 years Dorothy, his parents, and brothers Melvin, Dennis, and Lowell.
