Chamberlain Cubs bring down the Blackhawks
The Chamberlain football team took an early lead against the Woonsocket/ Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central Blackhawks in the first game of the season on Fri., Aug. 23, at Don Giese field. On the second play of the game, Chamberlain's Remington Rossow took the hand-off, broke two tackles and ran 88 yards for the first touchdown of the new season. Alejandro Calvera kicked the ball through the uprights for the extra point giving the Cubs a 7-0 lead. At the start of the second quarter, Marty Ross took the ball 30 yards for the second touch down. Again Calvera kicked the extra point and Chamberlain was ahead 14-0.
The third quarter was scoreless but at the start of the fourth period, the Blackhawks ran eight plays for 61 yards when Cayden Slykhuis passed the ball to Aiden Wormstadt for a 35-yard touchdown
reception. The extra point attempt failed and the Cubs maintained their lead, 14-6. Chamberlain turned the ball over to the Blackhawks with over two minutes left in the game. Fortunately for the Cubs, the Blackhawks threw three consecutive incomplete passes giving the Cubs the possession of the ball with just under two minutes. Jasiah Thompson made a 31-yard run for his first touchdown. The extra point kick was blocked, but the Cubs had a 20-6 advantage.
